Commissioned by Central Arizona Chapter of the American Guild of Organists

As much as I would like to say this piece was inspired by the concept of the Luminarias in Arizona, that would be a completely false statement.  In truth, the work pretty russian bride was commissioned and had several phrases written before any type of concept came to light.  I initially told my contact at the Central Arizona Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Kristin Holton Prouty, that I wanted to write something that could be played while a church congregation was receiving communion, but as the brass parts of the work evolved into more of a fanfare and less of a chorale, and the idea of repeatable and removable sections fell by the wayside, it became a struggle to consciously evoke anything.  Like any piece that lacks concept, I find the best approach is to push through and follow the music where it wants to go; the concept will make itself known to someone along the way (yes, this sounds like an odd approach, but I feel a very important process with which to attempt to reconcile).

When the near-final draft was deliver to Mrs. Holton Prouty, I asked her if she had any ideas for a title after she had listened to the computer realization a few times.  She immediately threw out that the piece clearly had something to do with light (Illuminations was the first thought).  With that in mind, I fell upon the image of the Luminaria display at the Phoenix Botanical Garden that I had grown so fond of over my time there.  While in reality they are a bunch of lunch bags full of sand with candles, the idea is that you do not approach them individually, but view them as a single design or image, creating some elaborate and inspiring illustrations throughout an apparently barren desert landscape.  Oddly enough, it fit and that is where it remains today.
